I'm thinking that using smaller thumbnails with a masonry-type grid (pinterest style) would be good. Having text excerpts with the thumbnails is fine, but try to keep them short. Also, the two menu buttons at the top seem useless and confusing. One makes the menu appear to the left and one makes it appear to the right, but there's only one link on them, which is to the home page. I got a popunder or something when I clicked on the left menu button, which was annoying. You also have to scroll way to the bottom to get to the items that should probably be in a sidebar or something.

A really good and flexible theme that I use a lot is the Divi theme from ElegantThemes. It's premium but you can use it for so many things.
