The british people were subsidising coal through their electricity bills for years before Thatcher come to power. When she took over the coal mining industry was costing the UK over £400 million (the equivalent of £1.4 billion today) a year.
Failing on a big issue like that makes your whole argument seem pointless as I don't think you really know what you're talking about...Comment

I remember Maggie Thatcher being referred to as the Iron Lady.. but she had somewhat of a velvet glove.
The poll tax is what undid her.. and then Johnny Major boy ended up taking power and being Prime Minister for quite a while.
Maggie Thatcher wasn't a bad prime minister, and to compare her to Bush (as Bush is viewed by the majority of US citizens) is truly a disservice to her works imo.

Would you really want to live in this day and age in a western country that relied on heavy industry? With the competition from third world countries?
Also regarding the oil you mentioned earlier, the nation still owns it, it is licensed by the DTI to the oil companies. The whole oil thing didn't start to be profitable for anyone until the 80's, even though it was discovered in the 60's. Also regarding the mines, she did close them down because she had to, would you really want one union to be able to hold the whole country randsom as the miners did on more than one occasion?
If it wasn't for Thatcher the UK would be 10 times worse off than it is now, she modernised it at the right time.

Modernise? She set us back a good couple of decades. I don't think you understand at all, we had cheap coal, cheap oil, cheap everything because it was all nationalised (and paying pretty much the same tax we are today), like Saudi Arabians only pay 0.13 for a litre of petrol. Not only did she ruin that while at the same time making millions lose their jobs, she also sold off a shit load council property.

I'm Icelandic, but I've spent a while in the UK.
Millions might have lost their jobs back then, but if things would have kept going like they were the UK would have been basicly bankrupt in the early 90's and millions would have lost their jobs in the last 15 years with companies preferring to move their heavy industry to cheaper countries. Also just thank god you don't nead coals for anything other than a bbq's today, I'm sure a big part of the tourist industry is thankful most of the UK isn't covered in smog anymore. Also regarding the council houses, the idea was bad in the first place. Getting all the poor people congregated in one area has never been the most brilliant thing to do...
Also If you want cheap petrol you can always move to Saudi Arabia or Venezuela (or even the states for that matter)

oh and I might add the the UK isn't the only country where wages have not gone hand in hand with price hikes. Most if not all western countries experienced the same.

Basically your problem with her is that she is not a hardcore socialist. It may surprise you to know that many people do not support state ownership of industry. It has a rather dubious track record. You might consider studying the demise of the Soviet Union for a good example of the long term results of state ownership.
