There supposedly was a first Soviet woman astronaut in space, but it appears her space ship burned down and the soviets hushed it. Here's a radio transmission that some Italian radio enthusiasts intercepted and recorded:

Later after the event the USSR claimed that it was just some satellite that crashed.

The Soviets were so intent on winning the space race they sent a lot of people on one way trips into space

I bet there is a lot we still do not know about the Russian side of the Space Race. While their initial attempts were amazing, I wonder how many behind the scenes failures they had.
