I built FAP1 originally on wordpress and went crazy trying to find the right masonry grid. Everything I found had something I didn't like plus I couldn't get the load times low enough to make me happy so I ditched wordpress and built straight html.
The best setup I had though was a simple full screen theme and then run the masonry grid with a plugin. The one I used is
jQuery Masonry
