That's a really, really, really bad suggestion.
You can either have self hosted VBulletin 5 "Connect" or hosted VBulletin Cloud.
VB Cloud is based on VB 5 "Connect" which in my experience has serious flaws. As one example, just last Friday people using the cloud version would get error messages when they posted replies and it took VBulletin 28 hours to fix it.

VB are gushing about how SEO friendly VBulletin 5 Connect is. However the page builder still produces pretty clunky pages and I've seen examples of meta-description tags missing when they should be there and similar issues.
As for forum software I would not recommend VBulletin at the moment as it feels too much like customers are paying $249 for the luxury of being a Beta Tester.Comment

There's no controversy, you just post really stupid shit all the time without knowing what's what.
Don't take my word for it. The VBulletin forum is full of very unhappy customers.
and in another thread an answer from Wayne Luke who is the head of Technical SupportRidiculous support by VB Team. I have been raising this issue several time in last couple of weeks and no positive response from VBCloud team. I am unable to make my forum live due to this issue.
Even the support head is admitting to bugs and problems and it's all management's fault.Support Technicians have no control over what gets fixed and when. We are aware there are quite a number of outstanding issues in the products and we point these out to Management daily. Ultimately, the Management makes the call on what goes into the next version of the software. I am sorry your bugs are not getting fixed as quickly as you would want. I wish they were fixed more rapidly myself. Unfortunately, there is nothing Support can do about the pace of development. We try to help and get workarounds in place as much as we can do so.

MyBB is stable and open source but lacking good mobile support which is essential now.
I am currently using NodeBB on one forum, however it's not a silver bullet solution either and not as simple to install as a PHP scripted forum. NodeBB is also not similar to any other forum software most people have used and while there is a VBCode plugin, it's not perfect. The technical level of entry to NodeBB is not for novice admins.
One of the projects I am working on requires me to make a recommendation on forum software for a client and I am still not ready to make any recommendations.Comment

OP asked for a cheaper alternative and I simply offered one. Never claimed it was an ideal solution, and would need more information to find one. I'm aware it has problems just like all the others. Anyway, don't know where you're coming from saying I post stupid shit all the time. Maybe so, but this is the "fucking around" forum.
