Yeah dog parks are good for socialization.

Years ago, I lived in an apartment complex that had a tennis court enclosed with a 15-17 ft fence. The mongrel kids in the complex all gathered inside this area and it looked like something out of Mad Max with 15-20 kids in it. Kept us happy, but I wondered wtf was going on in that 'prison yard'

Good question. People think that they will be able to socialize their dogs at these dog parks. But the truth is, most of the dogs at these parks haven't learned proper native language skills. It's best to find somebody with a dog who has learned good native language skills. Unless you can find a good time of day to go to the park when it's not too busy, and you meet with someone there.

If I had been the OP I would have body blocked the two big dogs from harrasssing my dog and made a loud noise such as "Eh!" It will scare the dogs off. It's a humane thing to do as well. You are not being mean, you are just telling them you mean business. Dogs do not like loud noises. You can use this technique with your own dog too. Like if you have an adolescent dog that humps your leg. Works like a charm. If the big dogs persisted despite my interference, then I would have left the park as the OP did.

Many dog owners at the park are clueless to the fact of when their dog bullies another dog. They are clueless. If a dog has good native language skills he will see that the other dog's tail is down or ears are held back. That means they are sending calming signals or are negotiating peace. If the harrassing dog ignores this, this is an example of very dog communication skills. And that is what the owner of each dog should be looking out for. It is the same thing as when you have a child out playing with other children. If one of the children starts to bully, then you discipline that child. It is no different than with dogs.

I wonder if PB fell victim to the old, "go get her boy, daddy wants to hook up with her!" trickery?

Coulda been Mister Right, Punker! hehe

Good info, Walrus. Makes sense. I would think dogs would get pretty nervous, anxious, overly excited at those places. Good idea to make sure you and they know the signs ahead of time.

I used to run a dog daycare in my home, and I was always a little miffed at how many people had outright refused to socialize their dogs. All kinds of dogs would come to visit who refused to have anything to do with my dogs, and were often downright agressive when it came to dealing with other dogs.

It seems that a lot of people still operate under the old idea that dogs fight if they get close to one another, so keep them apart. Oh yes, and NEVER feed them people food! Only dehydrated corn kibbles!

My dog is a 20lb pug/mini poodle mix. He's skinny as fuck and tall as shit so he thinks he is the king. He gets in scuffs and plays with a great dane at the dog park down here. He also takes on Sheppards and Labs.

If you dog isn't a sissy faggot he/she should be fine. If my pathetic meek dog can get along with 150lb animals any creature can.

I HATE Dog owners like that ... and it seems you don't think there was a problem. When in fact, I totally agree with PunkerBarbie ... she has every right to be annoyed.

Why do you think that? It is my opinion that people that take the time to take their dog to the dog park most likely take better care of their animals than most, and that would include shots.

Wild dogs suck. You know what cops do to wild dogs that run towards them? They shoot them with their gun. No lie, happened to my friend's dog. One bullet, one dead dog.

I know mine does. He gets way too overwhelmed when there are too may dogs there. It's okay if there are five or six and they are well behaved. I've also had to leave before because of some misbehaved dogs. I don't want to subject my dog to that kind of misery. I haven't gone back in about a year.

The park I go to has around 20 dogs in the afternoon, with half of them excitedly out of control, and the other half standing near their owners shivering in fear. I go at a time now when there may only be a couple of nice doggies for mine to play with.

In typical GFY fashion many of you have decided to read PB's post and pick out the parts that you want to read and not read all of what was stated.

                                    1) There are separate sides to many dog parks for a reason
                                    2) The responsiblity of the dogs actions are that of the owners, especially if he decides to put his larger dog on the small dog side of the park.
                                    3) obviously this guy was a douchebag... Dogs can get out of control. Putting them back under control is not that hard to do.

Dobe's are a large breed and has zero issues with her dog. PB i know he's big but he's not a great dane ;-) However a Dane will be my next dog. Now at the dog parks they do keep the big dogs separate from the small dogs and they do that for a reason.

Dog parks - like zoning laws, something my little town wouldn't dream of having ;)

My dogs are all HORRIBLY behaved. I would fear for their lives (and mine) if I took them to an open park and let them off leash.

Both the females think they are hunting dogs and constantly run up to large mammals (people, dogs, deer, bears) and produce "The Stance" while barking up a storm. My older dog once stood there barking and trying to fight the fake dog outside the groomer's office for at least 5 minutes. The younger one was barking at fireflies the other night.

My oldest male is incontinent and tries to hump everything and my youngest male is literally mentally impaired (born with water on his brain) so there's no telling WHAT stunt he'll pull - his usual trick is to run in the other direction barking at the air if the younger female is barking at something that actually exists. While it's all fun and games when we're at home, I'm sure I'd be forking out vet bill payments for my dogs and others if they were off leash somewhere public.

Although the owner usually gives some other excuse. You think it's funny, but wait until the situation escalates. What if you moved, or had a baby, became ill, etc..

On a side note, the #1 reason for dog relinquishment to animal shelters is because of exactly what you said in your post. Although the owner usually gives some other excuse. You think it's funny, but wait until the situation escalates. What if you moved, or had a baby, became ill, etc..
Oh, I'm pretty sure his inability to use his back legs and his inability to control his bladder and bowels are because he's incontinent. He humps because of the dominance - two completely different issues

I know my dogs aren't trained well - that doesn't mean they're going to a shelter. I've had two of them for 11 years - through pretty much every situation you can think of. They're rescue dogs and will always be taken care of by me or someone I know. I just know their limits and taking them to a public park off leash is one of them. Plus they entertain my nieces so much it's like free babysitting when they come visit. And I'm not sure what I'd do if I didn't leave the house covered in dog hair. Or muddy paw prints on my ass like my doctor pointed out to me the other day.......
