i agree... most of today's so called designers are just ripping off default wp themes, add another sidebar and change header. Actually just write some text with crappy fonts and that's it....

What sells a blog most is the logo IMO. If you have a decent logo that works well with the rest of the blog then you're onto a winner.
Check out some logos I designed at club1985.com. Im no pro but Im happy with the outcomes. Quick, simple and not to bland
Oh and my actual art blog is crappy, it's just a lame free one that I never edited so don't berate me for that, lol.

But if you have a shitty looking layout then a lot of people wont bother to look at whats on offer. If someone can't be bothered to spend a few hours making a good looking basic blog then people are going to think that they might not be offering the best content either. Its the same in every business, online or otherwise.
If you're looking to buy a new car and the dealership is run down then no matter what cars are inside you're going to have doubts as to how good they are.

Blogs are basically sales tools as far as I'm concerned, and act like doorway pages. Anything flashy and it detracts from the content. Too default template and there's no surfer trust right off the bat.
There's a happy medium. All I'm saying is I wouldn't be too hung up on how pretty your blog / site is if you're a webmaster touting someone else's wares.Comment
