Yeah, I'm bouncing to London to meet ds, and a few other old friends - we're doing the UK, then they're coming back to France so I can show them around, then Kiev and Moscow as a group. Ds and I will be doing the Mongolia leg ourselves.

I did that trip the opposite way... Beijing to Moscow via Ulaan Bataar in '85 in the middle of a nasty Siberian winter, truly mindblowing...many stories... like the time I came out of the train station in Ulaan Bataar to see the Tran Siberian moving off down the platform...without me.. but with my backpack. I had to run to find an open door and a guard barely pulled me up before it got too fast... it was like a scene from an old Western.. would not have been fun waiting a week in Outer Mongolia for the next train with no money passport/visa etc. 
I always look forward to your pics but can't wait to see what you capture on this next one especially. Have fun!

More specifically, what gear do you use for light travel? I have a Gitzo GT2540 with Markins M10, I have the feeling like it may be too heavy to drag it around future travels.

Here's what I shoot with:
Canon 1Ds, Normally a 17-40mm F4.0, or a 50MM f1.4
for the panoramic, a Fuji TX-2 / Hasselblad XPan-2 [they're the same camera], with a 30mm lens.
For lighting, normally just carry a LED torch, or if it's really dark, a 540EX Canon Flash, but that's it

Is that the $300 trip you're talking about? I've been trying to get someone to go with me on that for 3 years, none of my buddies will go. Was even in Europe on the 25th Anniversary and couldn't find someone to go with.
I am actually headed to Europe on Wednesday, if you're going to be in the area before the end of the month let me know and we can meet up someplace.

I'll be mostly in Germany and am trying to make it to Russia to visit a friend for a couple days, but ticket prices are crazy expensive. Other than that I have a bunch of days open, so if you get a couple days that open up let me know and we can try to meet up.
