windows 10 reset, all work lost

so my bro got the win10 free upgrade from win8, then read an article on making it secure, then got locked out of his machine after doing so.

Then tried to recover his password but it wouldn't play ball.

He then tried a reset to win8 'but save personal files', and lost the lot.

Anyone had this hiccup and know if/how he can recover all his stuff?

    Thanks

he should just restore from a backup.

if he was dumb enought to upgrade to 10 without making a backup first then oh well...

then he should take the comp to a computer place and see if they can recover the data.

if he is too dumb to make a backup then he is probably too dumb to fix the problem.

yeah that was my suggestion, and yeah - he can follow steps ok though, and I'm assuming there has to be some - it's just a jump from win8 to win10 and back so in theory it shouldn't really be that hard... aside from a ton of spam from easeus or someone, not much I can find on google though.

Ah well, if nobody else has had this and solved it I'll send him on his way.

wow, sucks. i can't find any reason(s) to upgrade and plenty to not. i'll get win10 when it's installed on my next new computer, hopefully years down the road.

When backing up data is as simple as plugging in an external hard drive (or flash drive), costing less than a 100 bucks for 500 gig to 1 TB ones these days, there really is no excuse for not having stuff backed up.

We've all had them, but this is definitely one of those special "live and learn" moments your friend is going though.

Just make sure he keeps backups from now on especially with something like upgrading an OS, whether you're installing a new Windows or install a new Linux OS, always backup beforehand.

Windows 10 allows you to do full image backups set on a schedule, file history backup where it backups your personal files every 1 hour and allows you to restore from those hourly backups, and you can also sync to Microsoft Onedrive which comes installed by default. Basically there's already a good amount of backup options that come with Windows 10 and you can also download a free tool like Backupper.
