Bob Geldhof and Bono come to mind.

Then during the late 60s and early 70s a lot of musicians singing anti war songs helped pull America out of Vietnam.

Societal change is much different than the decisions our Gov't makes. Sadly, I don't think musicians ever change the way our Gov't operates. Can you really name one thing that a Gov't has done in direct reaction to what a musician said in a song? Or even publicly? Our troops pulled out of Vietnam because of public outrage. Did the songs help with the public outcry? Maybe very slightly. But it was Congress who eventually made the vote not to continue the necessary funding for the war.

Definately this duo with their politically charged song and matching, most genious ever, music video.

i agree - Su Su Sudio came as something of a revelation to me and changed my perceptions of the world around me - Collins is like an onion, layers of wisdom so powerful it brings tears to your eyes.

It depends on what you mean by impact...hard to deny that the majority of the world knows Micheal Jackson (regardless of his mental state) but if you mean impact as in political changes, changes in which we live, etc then that is a harder question because a lot of musicians reflect what is going on in the underbelly of society and may help to bring it to the front. That doesn't mean they pushed the change but that they were riding the wave.

The Who come to mind, but mainly Townshend and Moon...they inspired generations of future rockers to literally fuck shit up. And even though Townshend wasn't the first to destroy his instrument on stage (Jerry Lee Lewis was the first), he sure as fuck popularized it.

Playing the same three chords but in different ways makes the Ramones better? The Clash broadened their horizon a bit which made them stand out more. But this isn't about which band you like more... it's about the impact of change they made. And I would defintely say The Clash did more for promoting change than The Ramones ever did. It ain't Koka Kola, it's rice.

Strummer was a god, true say. However, The Ramones were THE act to infuence the soon to emerge Brit punks. (Pistols/ Clash).

This is an argument that is way beyond the scope of a message board. There's no doubt that each had their good and bad qualities...but to write off a band for using 3 chords is just retarded. They also had plenty of songs with more than 3 chords. I'll take that kind of beauty in simplicity over any kind of dub influenced horseshit any day of the week.

There's no doubt that each had their good and bad qualities...but to write off a band for using 3 chords is just retarded. They also had plenty of songs with more than 3 chords. I'll take that kind of beauty in simplicity over any kind of dub influenced horseshit any day of the week.
I'm not writing The Ramones off because they used a few chords or more. I love The Ramones! And I know their importance to the punk scene. I just think that The Clash accomplished much more than The Ramones ever did musically. A lot of The Ramones stuff sounds incredibly similar to itself even if they did use a few more chords.
