Example: you have a Kim Kardashian Tumblr and then a general celebrity blog on a domain of your own. The general celebrity blog has a Kim Kardashian section. Every now and then the Kim Kardashian Tumblr links over to the Kim Kardashian section of the celebrity blog, pushing over traffic.
Traffic may be small, but should be pretty qualified clicked traffic. If the funnel was right, the small quantity of traffic should still generate revenue/book markers.

If someone on the Tumblr team is reviewing your blog and they are having a bad day they may delete it for no reason at all.
About your example above; that is a better way to monetize and is less likely to get your account banned but again, if they believe that you are making money they will terminate your account.
To play their game you have to set up yours to incorporate that aspect of it.
