Hitler ... lost his .. head

    Didn't take long

In life, he died from a pistol shot to the head. But yesterday, Hitler's wax effigy met the fate of the French nobility after 1789: decapitation. A controversial waxwork that went on show at Madame Tussauds in Berlin last week was beheaded by anti-fascist protesters within minutes of the doors opening.

'A man leapt over the ropes and, with a single whack, the head was off,' said a witness.

A 41-year-old man, a member of Antifa, a radical group opposed to neo-Nazi violence in Germany, was apprehended by police shortly afterwards. He faces charges of criminal damage, assault and trespass.

Some 25 workers spent about four months on the waxwork, using more than 2,000 pictures and pieces of archive material.

Last night, as curators took away the decapitated dictator for repairs, it was unclear when the wax Hitler will be seen again. Tussauds' management will meet tomorrow to decide whether to repair the figure or place it in storage. It is illegal in Germany to display any symbols or figures of the Third Reich that promote Nazism; Holocaust survivors had earlier attacked the decision to show the waxwork.

That's ridiculous, whether they like it or not he was a big part of history and should be displayed in museums. You can't just censor history because you don't like it.

Not necessarily. There were people behind Hitler who might have started WWII anyway.

Hitler was a brilliant front man...by the time anyone realized how powerful he had become it was way too late to do anything about it - because you'd be killed.

Brilliant ? ... no just excepted and found his way in to a government position using the excuse that "his" people were of a master race that had its roots in blood lines that reached back like 1000s of years... he was trying to prove this.... its actually a very convoluted and controlling methodology that he and those who he based his philosophies from... but to call him brilliant is slapping those families who lost family on both sides of the war because of this man.

There's no question he was insane, but that doesn't make him any less brilliant. He mobilized a nation, took over most of Europe, and aside from the killing created one of the most effecient systems of goverment.

It's not a slap in the face to anyone.

You need to read Hitler's memoirs and private statements. Honestly, compared to what is known history they shed a completely different light on him. Most of the real crazy people were those around him, Himmler, etc. Hitler, whilst irrational, had a very understandable, even if completely objectionable, logic to everything he did, and in the end I've no doubt it would of lead to a lot of advances and good, but at a terrible cost. Take for instance medical experiments on humans, much of modern science was based on what Nazi scientists discovered, but of course it's morally and ethically objectionable, Hitler though saw it as a means to a better end (which it may have been) but obviously by our standards we still wouldn't consider it justifiable.

Truth is though, he didn't, and he states this in a lot of his private works, truly believe Germans were superior to all others, or that modern day Italy was a direct continuation of the Roman empire, or in Christianity, or a lot of the stuff he said or promoted. It was again just a means to and end. He said many times in private for instance that he wished Germany had inherited Islam over Christianity, despite being a "Christian" himself. Personally I wouldn't call him unbelievably brilliant, but I would call him and a lot of his policies very interesting. I think making him taboo is idiotic, just as making a lot of things anyway connected with the Nazi's completely taboo as well. Stuff like eugenics for instant, are almost completely untouchable, but not all eugenics involves sterilizing the poor or whatever image comes up in your head. In my opinion all this stuff should be open for debate, consideration and discussed.

If he hadn't let the invasions go to his head and he stopped when he should have, WW2 doesn't happen. Which means here in 2008 the US doesn't enjoy extreme wealth, and is almost certainly not the #1 country. So that's another angle to think about this from.
