Yes, the poor performing stores will be closed.
The stores residing close to Britney Spears house will remain.Comment

I will never understand how someone can hate something like Starbucks. It isn't like they have an army forcing you to patronize them. Just don't walk in the door.
See how easy that was?
Obviously you have no clue as to how big the US is.Comment

They opened 2 Starbucks in Buenos Aires last month. Until now, you need to wait in line for about 2 hours to get in an get a cup of coffee .... that's how popular Starbucks is outside of the US! They also just opened their first branches in Eastern Europe and the stores are buzzing like hell.Comment

There used to be these doughnut store all over LA, and people would be in the drive thru that literally wraped around corners. We're talking 40 - 50 cars deep. Now... they're gone. Replaced with Rico's tacos on Van Nuys.

the downtown and suburbs of most major cities have so many starbucks you could throw a rock and it would bounce off 4 different stores before hitting the ground. It's totally ridiculous.

they simply opened WAY too many, I will be glad to see less of them. I see them more frequently than MCDONALDS! I would say McD's rollout of expensive coffees has cut into starbucks BUT it seems to be hit and miss rollout because I know many places don't have the newer coffees at their local McD's... They even have the iced shit...-- QUOTE ME IT MAKES ME FEEL SPECIAL --Comment

We have Tim Horton's popping up on more corners than Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts has been putting new stores in all over the place too. These two have to be cutting into Starbucks profits as well.they simply opened WAY too many, I will be glad to see less of them. I see them more frequently than MCDONALDS! Although I dont hate Starbucks personally, I can see how someone might. It's the Wal-Mart syndrome. Imagine you love going to the corner local coffee place, then a Starbucks opens across the street and your local place loses business. Eventually they either have to shut their doors or be bought out by a bigger chain. You lose your local coffee hangout. You curse the mermaid logo.
Im not a big coffee fan so I could give a shit but I'm just saying.Comment

Your analysis might hold water if Starbucks was selling their coffee cheaper than the local mom and pop shop. I doubt that was the case based on the number of people here whining about their prices.Although I dont hate Starbucks personally, I can see how someone might. It's the Wal-Mart syndrome. As ive said before, the reason Starfucks coffee tastes so bitter or burnt is because they use such a vast amount , no one farmer can grow enough to feed the demand. So they buy from many farmers, each farmers bean will taste different so to make all the coffee taste the same they over roast the bean after mixing huge vats of beans from all over the place.
I own my own coffee shops and i think Starfucks is an amazingly well run business, they have the right idea by providing the same experience to each and ever customer no matter where in the world they are. It worked for Micky Dee's very well and it has made Starfucks the largest coffee company in the world. Saying that i hate their coffeeicq. 176240424 44.years as a pornographer !!!!!!!!!!!Comment

wow ..... you kidding man.....thats actually a smart move for them to not go out of business...economy is bad for everyone but besides the point...a company who grows that big in such a short period of time must step back and re-evaluate and make some adjustments.... 600 stores is just a small tweak for that caliber of a company...they have over 15,000 stores! Here is a little info for you on the multi billion dollar empire thats like a drug for people....coffee will not go away! just like cigarettes!
Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) is an international coffee and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world,[1] with 15,012 stores in 44 countries.[2] Starbucks sells drip brewed coffee, espresso-based hot drinks, other hot and cold drinks, snacks, and items such as mugs and coffee beans. Through the Starbucks Entertainment division and Hear Music brand, the company also markets books, music, and film. Many of the company's products are seasonal or specific to the locality of the store. Starbucks-brand ice cream and coffee are also sold at grocery stores.[email protected]

The real issue will be whether they can save the brand image.
What's quickly happening is that Starbucks is becoming the poster boy for the worsening economy. There have been countless stories about people cutting back on their Starbucks to save a penny and now this story about the store closings. Not to mention every similar news story mentions how McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts offer the same product for cheaper and usually include some quote from a past customer who now prefers the cheaper alternative. Not exactly great PR.
Just like Enron was the poster boy for the stock market bubble of the late 90's, Starbucks could be the face of the excess before the economic downturn of 08. The country is rethinking how it wasted so much, from gas, to everything coming in individual wrappers, to now even new style milk cartons have been released that are less wasteful. Spending four or five bucks on a drink seems a bit odd now, even if you can afford it.
Closing the 600 stores is a smart move but they need to save the image of the brand before the media labels them as the first casualty of the worsening economy.Last edited by mynameisjim; 07-02-2008, 08:21 PM.jim (at) amateursconvert . com Amateurs ConvertComment

It's a shame they diluted that brand image before all the issues that you list. The real issue will be whether they can save the brand image.

Can you get on a flight where they don't serve Starbucks these days? When was the last time you walked into an office that didn't have Starbucks grounds for their slow drip machine?
They took a premium brand and made it Folgers.Comment

Okay, I will admit I have never tasted an iced coffee from DD, however, there was a commercial on TV for them a few minutes ago, and I actually watched it.
There is no way in hell that the DD iced coffee is anywhere close to a Starbucks Frap.
Now, if you just want a cup of regular coffee, sure, but I have a feeling regular coffee isn't where Starbucks is making their $$$Comment

They are closing fewer than 4% of their stores. 94 out of 100 stores will still remain. Can you explain how that makes them "history" ?Comment
