    Moral Dilemma

I am in the process of opening a bricks and mortar business.
It's something that's pretty new and until a few months ago when we decided to go ahead with the idea we only knew of one similar place but that was over 50 miles away.

Since then we have found the perfect location about 8 miles from our home and have brought it to within a week of opening.
We are now aware of a competitor that has opened a place in our home town, the place is bigger than ours (the owner used to run a restaurant and has had it converted).

From what I can see this guy doesn't have a website yet or Facebook page. I am considering registering his company name/town and redirecting it to ours.

    Is this poor practice?

Probably, but with the ethics we once knew a mystery to most these days, why not.

In the long game, maybe project yours as the 'boutique' of quality product/s and service,
whilst projecting him as the 'lesser' store for the ill informed/advised consumers for your business.

Just tread with caution with any wording

Maybe you can convince google that his business address is in, say, a volcano and have GPS taking his customers to impending doom.

What sort of business is it?

Sometimes a little bit of competition is a good thing. Gives people a chance to compare and may the best man win.

Also, depending on your market niche the area might be able to successfully sustain 2 businesses so why be a bitch and cybersquat their name?

Take the high road on this one (advise I rarely give and even more rarely do).

                  loose the porn mentality

give your customers high quality at a fair price with good service

say what you do, do what you say....remember customers are too hard to get to lose them because of poor customer service.

do those things youll be fine

Since you clearly can't "handle" the competition, you are much better of ignoring them and focusing on your own business

(and because this is GFY, by handling, I do not mean take out or do nasty shit, I mean learning from them, adapting and so on)
                        But.... I pulled out...

If you ''post'' anything to this hypothetical Facebook name that would imply his place of business; you would be operating in impersonation and/or defamation -- you could get hit with a libel lawsuit.

Most businesses that are profitable have a lot of competitors. The lower the entry ''ticket price'' is -- the more competition there will be -- this is not to say that small consumer retail businesses cannot be profitable -- just more competitors will exist.

Concentrate on your own business' unique value proposition in its marketplace (your locality or intended geo targeting area). If you have the knowledge to leverage digital marketing and digital branding making that work driving floor traffic as well, or better than, old school advertising; newspaper ads, matchbooks, flyers, TV ads, billboards ... Then you already have an edge -- digital sabotage of your competitors is a poor short term strategy

How can this be a moral dilema for you? Your natural gut response is your nature. This cannot be unlearned. I can only say it's best you follow other peoples advice instead of your gut.

i love it. moral dilemma on a site called go fuck yourself. but yes, be honest. sometimes it sucks to be honest because dishonesty by competitors will walk all over you, but if your customers find out then your integrity is shot. it will also make you feel better in the end.

The op is a fucking asshat. In this thread he/she/it/whatever, want's to use sleazy means to fuck with a competitor. In another thread it want's to know how to steal product descriptions and stock or privately owned photos. In another it wants info on how to be unanimous while doing shady shit that arose from being an escort.

I read some of those after my post. It's sad people need to resort to such things. Sure, business is tough out there these days, but taking dishonest and potentially illegal shortcuts isn't going to help anyone when the economy starts pounding again.
