Step tracking is what I use the most--after heart beat, anyway. I do a bunch of walking/running. It's a good measure of overall activity. It's what I use to compete with friends.
And a better read for why steps are a decent stat to track,
here's FitBits take. My daily average is 14k for this week... cuz I know you're interested :P
