How do you protect your data in laptop/tablet when travelling?

So, if you travel.... Hotels, internet cafes, suspicious WIFI spots, etc...
How do you protect your data so nobody could spy on you or nail it in a case of theft?

One of the steps, as I understand, is to use VPN like hidemyass to connect through it.

    Share your tips please

in the past when i was traveling non stop and often to shitty countries, i would just use one notebook for travel only that was sterile. Any files i needed, i'd leave on my server and download them from where i was and then delete them later and wipe the drive. I don't think that there is any encryption (encrypting files) that can't be cracked by someone determined to do so... and depending on where you are in the world, just having encrypted files on your computer could be enough to lose it anyway.

Yes, fewer illegal immigrants working equates to more job opportunities for American citizens.

With shitty internet + VPN the work with data isn't going to be easy...

It doesn't make volumes or partitions can't be found... It makes encrypted files/folders/drive that can be mounted as drives so you can ready them. Every single data forensics tool kit will be able to see the volumes, their size.., etc,
But as they are encrypted they wont be able to access the files inside.
