If it works for him, surely that's grounded in reality, albeit his? And if it works/worked for him, why wouldn't it work for others? Obviously it won't work for everyone, not even the majority, but if it works for him and literally him alone, that's still reality
I can't remember that one in detail (though do remember I enjoyed it), but I'm sure it wasn't as simple as 'this one tiny thing will result in pure bliss', so much like a low calorie cereal won't make you shed the pounds, but does help as 'part of a calorie controlled diet', if you are looking to achieve y, then x can only help
