News Man charged after shooting at suspects who stole his minivan

A man has been charged with shooting at two males who allegedly stole his minivan Saturday evening in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

About 6 p.m., 44-year-old Wilfrido Cruz called police to report his Dodge Grand Caravan stolen from his home in the 4300 block of West Cullerton, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Officers responded to meet with Cruz and complete a preliminary report, police said.

Cruz, who has a conceal carry license and a FOID card, left to search for his vehicle armed with a handgun, police said.

A few minutes later, Cruz saw two males in his vehicle two blocks away, in the 4100 block of West Cullerton, police said. He opened fire on his own minivan and the two males, who ran away.

    No one was hurt.

Cruz went back to his home and hid his weapon, police said. He then spoke to the officers, who were still at the scene and had heard the gunfire.

The officers discovered Cruz had two semi-automatic handguns, a revolver and a rifle, police said.

Cruz was charged with one felony count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, and is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday.

No it's not.. A gun is meant only to defend yourself or someone else from immediate harm. If someone is running away from you they are not putting your life in danger therefore you do not have the right to shoot them, just because they took your stuff.

you don't strike me as the sort that would covet your minivan to such a degree that you would fire bullets into it after it's already been stolen.

If he had any brains he probably would of said that, still there were likely other witnesses and the officers would have a hard time believing that he chased after them to shoot them if they were pointing a gun at him..

Still that at least would of been a better argument than.. They took ma Van, so I shot at them.. Loss of personal property doesn't give justification to kill.
