VOD distribution through AEBN

Hello,

I am working with Chasey Lain who is venturing into production with direct distribution through AEBN or the like. Chasey really was burned bad by Red Light in her last production venture through hard dvd sales, she never got paid for the product. So we are trying something different going down this direct to VOD distribution. What is missing right now is any sense of the realistic market value... what level of VOD minuet volume for new title releases might we expect? I know there will be a high degree of variability on this but does anyone have experience in this that can advise some typical numbers they have experienced? All i have to work with is an incomplete detail of her historical dvd sales... which is totally useless.

ANY input would be greatly appreciated

$$$ Fluctuates like anywhere else, but they all pay, for sure!

You need to have a lot of titles with AEBN and update weekly to make good money, this is what I was told by the rep after I signed on with them last year. I sent in 5 videos as a test and averaged $150-$200 per video total. After the first commission check nothing. AEBN is solid and lots of studios submit to them weekly but wasn't worth the additional cost & time for me to submit more to them.

Thank you for your response. In your experience when you released new videos was there a significsnt curve in viewership.... I.e. If a video was published 1 year ago was 60% of the total vod minets realized in the first 90 days?.... after which the vod volume dropps off linearly to some reduced level.

How many vod minutes would a popular release expect to see monthly? We are teaming up chasey with some of her other avn halL of fame stars from the same period in hopes of rekindling some nostalgic interest from her fanbase and her costars fanbase. We are planning to do some advertising as well. I just dont have a sense of the volumes.

It sounds reasonable that a new release with well known stars could see 50,000 views in a month.. What would the average viewer retention... be 10min? I am speculating.... But those are very attractive numbers if they cane true.

What is the reality of your experience... Any input on our strategy... Valid or not

Thanks for your response... At $200 per title... Having a lot of titles would just mean you would file for bankruptcy sooner... Were these new release videos with well known stars or was this generic content?

You would want to look at it as "auxiliary" revenue, not primary revenue. Extra money that you can make off of content that you already have.

Will you be making a paysite with this content?

Shes fine... Like everyone.., she has had her moments but sanity rules still. I have known her for many years she lived with me for several years as well (that worked because we were not dating) Its time for her to do some smart things with all the connects she has.. And maybe a minor comeback but she isnt planning to be the primary content supplier she will do enough to stir up a little attention and to facilitate other opportunities

We are not planning to do a pay site... My hats off to you guys that can make that work still. I dont see how we could make it worth it at this point in her career. My last real effort in a pay site was in 1999 where i was an investor into liveporn.com with atlas multimedia. I put 150k into the business and we made the cover of "US News and World Report" as well as some talk on tv news talk shows. We got something like a half a million hits the day the magazine hit the stands... We converted 3 into 29.95 monthly memberships. It was depressing.

So our plans with chasey includes affiliate content.... The vod direct distibution and then a more mainstream secondary site called "chasey lain interviews" in which we will be supplying content from stories of her past and interviews of tge same content from her connects we will be trying to draw in a broader spectrum of interest so that ad revenue becomes enough to matter.

We have a long way to go before we draw the traffic.... So a lot of her efforts will be around getting back into the public eye and into mainstream media. I dont beleive we are likely to be a great financial story just focusing in on porn. Its a tough road butone that offers a bigger reward if sucessful

My question really is ..."Can we possibly make real money with the right content" going down this road. Initially chasey thought we had Janine Lindemulder for the first scene with her ... but she hesitated because its been some time since she had done a scene ... so right now shes only considering it. Then we had Tami Monroe which was a done deal ... but that is now unraveled because Tami didn't realize how much attention this was going to draw ... which she isn't into ... long story.

The bottom line is we have a list of about 20 big names from the late 1990's and early 2000's that we are targeting who are Chasey's friends. We only want to put out something unique that a lot of people will show interest in ...even if they are not current subscribers to any other porn. We want to get it out there ... press release ... maybe work some exclusivity in for the group we sign up with.

This is the strategy I would love to hear you guys thoughts on ... your on the ground living this ... we don't have that floor of sanity you have to stand on.... so please throw rocks or suggest changes.... speculate on how the market will react ... if at all

But if Chasey can connect with her other late nineties/early 2000's pornstar friends then it could be a goldmine. Her friends would be more than likely to play on Twitter and Instagram rather than do scenes again. Besides, scenes are fine but they can (and will be) pirated.

So I would spend more time on mobile versions of Chasey's sites and also get going with Twitter so Chasey can build up her followers. It's also the place to do "press releases" these days. Thank you very much for your input. We are doing much of that now ... twitter .. 2 FB page & profile.. Tumbler and Chasey's personal blog. We will have an AVN Hall of fame costar from that time frame to pair up with Chasey... it doesnt make sense to do this without that. We are just working out who. That is one huge advantage with Chasey is her depth of contacts. The sister web site "chaseylaininterviews" is going to be heavily about social media ... this is where that will come together and we will be bringing lots of retired stars out to share their stories.

Now while she has been the subject of attack by the likes of Donny Long... in truth these last few years she has reconnected with many people and major players in a social and friendly way. She owes no one anything and has not done wrong to anyone. She was victimized by Red Light in her dvd distribution of her Forbidden Cinema Productions ... hence the interest in bypassing that avenue and go direct to vod. So she is in a good position to pull favors and put something big together with little costs.

Yes i need to make some changes for mobile but i dont yet have enough traffic to worry about it... i will ask her about Chelsea Blue and let you know

It would be great if someone here with experience in vod distribution could help me do a sanity check on what the likely numbers might be.

For this to really work I need 30,000 to 50,000 views a month for the first 3 months with an average viewer retention of 10 min. .. I see the volume dropping significantly after 3 months ... but all this is barely a wild ass guess. Any real world experience shared on this specifically would make me indebted ... worth at least a beer and a hot dog ... thanks again

That is exactly what we are going for ... I don't believe a revenue stream that provides a living income is sustainable or even possible for chasey if its only about porn. The efforts on "chaseylaininterviews" will be directed at expanding her audience into the interests of house wives and such who would never visit a porn site willingly. We have some major stories to tell that TMZ will be sure to pick up on ... enough for a couple of books already. This will have a life of its own but we need to get her back into circulation a bit first before we roll all this out hardcore.

When you have her social media base built up I would suggest that Chasey do an AMA on Reddit. Drive the fans between the different platforms so you have a waiting audience to market to when the time comes.

ok AMA on Reddit, i will look into it. There is another 1/2 dozen social platforms beyond where our current presence is (facebook, Twitter, +Google and Tumbler) are there any specific ones we should be adding that are great resources ... I have some minor experience on reddit ... but there quite a few more i don't.

I dont think her active fan-base would be a money maker yet. Her search relevance plummeted in 2008 and has not recovered. It might be worth it once we get the new scenes shot and out to vod ... see how its received.

I am considering getting 3 or 4 girls from this era that were big names and doing a combined content site with current personal blogs and pictures. I think this is a 1+1 = 3 scenario ... interest in any one star is likely to be pretty tepid as compared to current best selling stars ... but combined with several girls from that era might draw in considerably more. We are in a good position to do this being well connected on a personal level with the target girls.
