In Europe we have geography lessons that are telling us that climate is not a constant and it's always getting wormer or colder.
And we also have a history lessons that tells us that in the last 12.000 years the global climate was much wormer than it's now with the exception of last 500 years (so called little ice age) when in the years 1500-1750AD it was getting colder and in the years 1750-2015 it was getting back to normal (for Halocen era).
I know that this is very confusing for americans. Your country is not even 250 years old, so you where living only in the second half of the little ice age but mybe this chart will help you to understand a climate:
