2nd grader allowed to carry religious knife in class

And people freak out about private prayer... this is a new one.

Frankly I would be more worried about other kids grabbing the knife then this kid, but either way, wow.

AUBURN, Wash. ? Like all religions, the Sikh faith is steeped in tradition. One of the most revered is the carrying of a Kirpan, a sword or dagger, at all times.

"People will even wear it in the shower. It's kind of hard for others to understand," said Jaswinder Singh, spokesman for the Gurudwara Sikh Center of Seattle.

The concept of the Kirpan, considered an instrument of social justice, is taught to children at an early age.

"For the people who are formally initiated to the Kirpan, it's very near and dear," said Singh.

But some question whether it is appropriate to bring to school.

A few weeks ago at Auburn's Gildo Rey Elementary, a Sikh family approached the school telling them their little boy would be carrying a Kirpan every day.

Rastafarian's smoke weed as part of their religion, are you to now allow them to toke up at school? Carry a little spliff in their pocket as long as nobody can see it? Make an exception for one you have to make and exception for all.

So some kids are being suspended for making a drawing of a gun or a knife, but we are so scared offending some people we allow them to bring in an actual knife.

Back in the 90s this came up as an issue in Toronto. The sikh community claimed it was just religious symbolism and demanded to be allowed carrying them in schools.

A few weeks later a student was stabbed with a khirpan.

Oh yeah...just a "ceremonial" thing.

I'm sick of this shit. When in Roman...do as the Romans do.

You don't like our laws?

The horrible incident aside... Was it one of the Sikh kids who did the stabbing? The reason I ask this is because AFAIK Sikh religion means you're never allowed to kill any living creature. My memory might be failing me though.

It was a long time ago and I can't recall the exact specifics of the case - but I'm quite sure it was a sikh student who did the stabbing after he was teased by other students. It didn't get a lot of press coverage at the time as I recall - but I definitely remember the incident. We were living in Toronto at the time and it was quite a controversial issue.
