Two months ago I read about a recall by HP. It was for power cords on laptops. My HP laptop is three years old, but I thought I would check it out anyway. My model was on the list. Apparently a dozen or so power cords, out of millions, got a little too hot and caused charring on carpet, etc.
HP replaced all of them. All you had to do was apply on their website and wait for the replacement (which they paid for.) A dozen or so out of millions and they took this massive cautionary step. I would assume for litigation reasons, not just to be nice, but all the same they did replace cords when only a few were impacted.
I could never see Apple do this. In fact, when I was at the Apple store a few weeks ago I asked the employee that I was talking to about the Plus phones bending and whether or not Apple would replace them. He says "sure, if you have Applecare just bring your phone in and pay the deductible and we will replace it."
That's right. You need that extended insurance and you need to pay the deductible to get a faulty product replaced.
