Tesla Motors is planning to construct a new plant for mass production of the Tesla WhiteStar in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A total capital investment of $35 million is projected to be spent on the 150,000-square-foot (14,000 m²) plant, which would provide employment for over 400 people. Competition for the plant was intense, as several states including California, Arizona, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan were vying for the investment.
This facility will be the world's first factory dedicated to the mass production of electric vehicles. The company intends to produce at least 10,000 vehicles per year.[11] SunCal, a land development company, has pledged to provide up to 75 acres (300,000 m²) of land next to the initial site at no cost, if Tesla Motors undertakes a major expansion in the future.
Construction was originally planned to begin in April 2007, with completion expected by 2009, including tooling. Tesla Motors has stated that it intends to offer the Tesla WhiteStar for sale in the Fall of 2009.Comment

Really? You went for a drive with him apparently haha. Nah truthfully, the only Tesla that is currently on the road that anyone owns is production model 1, or Elon Musk's, so maybe you went for a drive in a test one. They had gearbox issues are only now entering into production, though I think they've officially sold around 1000. Elon provided most the funding for Tesla, and also his other project Spacex. Cool projects he works on. The Whitestar should be interesting, they said it will be unveiled in the second quarter of 08, so any week now.ICQ: 637//961--015Comment

Comparing that to a Ferrari? Anybody who does that gotta be joking... Sure, the tesla is a great idea aimed at people who like to show off, but it definitely doesn't have anything to do with most of the things a real car enthusiast looks for in a sports car.

Why not? What is the average cost of a new car on the low end these days? If people are willing to pay $100k for a Range Rover, why not spend $100k for a sports car that does 0-60 in less than four seconds (faster than some Ferraris) AND have one of the first real electric cars on the road?
