Once again in Syria, Russia support for the dictator Assad lead to open civil war and allowed the ISIS to hone their skills as there was no "real" army to fight there being the US was kicking their ass in Iraq so they went to Syria where the easier fight was.

The best part was after the USSR showed up they ousted their puppet dictator anyway and caused a full on uprising which helped cause the fall of the USSR, partially at the hands of the up and coming bin Laden as he was one of the commanders that defeated the soviet troops.
