I agree with GPS. Dominican Republic is a nice vacation. I've been to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. Punta Cana def. has better beachers, more touristy. Puerto Plata is more low-key.self made mothafucka.

I've lived in Puerto Rico and have travelled to the DR and I love it.....I loved Jamaica even more and it was my favorite spot in the Caribbean..
But let me give you a little secret....Go to Belize....It is more beautiful than Hawaii and just as fun as Jamaica, minus all of the red eyed mean looking Rastas everywhere....The Rasta's in Belize actually have a SMILE on their face.
It's sandwiched between Mexico and Guatamala but the official language is English....It has an easy to understand exchange rate (2BZ = $1) and the food is something that you don't have to get used to as you'll spend a lot of time eating grilled fish and chicken....There isn't a lot of fried food like in Puerto Rico...
I was just there in early April and I would have returned in June with my children for vacation but the ex-wife won't sign for the passport....Therefore, I gotta wait until August when I'm going again and I will be looking into buying property down there because I will eventually retire and live there...
If you want to be harrassed by whores like in DR, cool....But if you want to lay on the beach and meet some real friendly normal girls and tourists, go to Belize...

I don't like Dominican republic coz you are only 100% save when you are on a resort..
Most people there are very poor and to be honest i do not enjoy holiday between poor people.. for me it just doesn't feel right..
i lived in the Caribbean for 4 years and seen about every island there..
Martinique is my #1 choice... it's a beautiful island with very very nice people.
There is a Club Med as well.. highly recommended.
Martinique also has a volcano you can visit..and many historical places...also many places still show evidence of pirates..

sounds like most of the replies are coming from the perspective where money doesn't matter too much... if the plane ride is free then you mainly have to just look around at some all-inclusive resorts to get your drink on and be lazy.
Personally when I go places I still try to keep some sort of a budget. Generally when you do some searching the bahama's are usually the "cheap entry level type carib vacation" plenty of decent places to go, drink all you want and be lazy on beaches, for me thats about all I feel like doing and airfare + staying tends to be way less than half the price of going to some of the nicer islands. If you get drunk enough do you really care?
Also worth asking is are you bringin somebody or do you need to hookup down there? because obviously some places have some seriously nasty bitches...
