J-lo brought the "big ass" thing more into the spotlight years ago. Then Kim Lardassian came along and furthered the cause even moreso. And yes, lately there's been an influx of big booty babes out there.
I don't know about calling it a "new trend" but it's definitely growing in popularity. The right girl with the right ass = goldmine, in the right hands.
