    Why is it?

    Suspect Willie Stephens, 33, is charged with attempted assault as a hate crime after the alleged attack that left the woman lying out cold in the street.

              The dude is fucked up and needs to be punished but hate crimes shouldn't be on the books. What makes killing someone vs killing someone of a different race legally/morally different? Obviously the person in both cases hated the other person, duh. It's really stupid to try and prove what people think and yet again lets group people by race because it's SOOO meaningful.

              Don't take that as I like what he did, he should get the full time that is prescribed by the law for what he did. And if the person with the woman happened to be packing and pulled out a gun and shot him, that would have been fine by me too. While committing a serious crime, criminals should have no rights, period, as far as I am concerned.

Pretty much every even somewhat more developed animal specie have different cultures (and "races"), even insects. Some ameboid might not have. Spend a week with some guys, just the group of you, and you have unique culture within week.

                                                                                                              Typically, when you are arrested they pile on the charges to increase the bail amount, thus making it difficult to bail out. What happens in court is entirely different. Like someone mentioned, it's going to be a tough "hate crime" case if the perp and victim are both black.

They suspect she was targeted because she was wearing a burka, hence the hate crime charge. She was not punched in the stomach, she was punched in the face and knocked out.
