    That was a funny meme.

Humans just found an interactive alternative screen to stare at that is highly portable.
Is that why a TV show named Jeopardy has to use questions about TV shows?

Media and communication has evolved. Just how is sitting bored waiting for a subway car or bus more anti-social by using a smartphone/wireless tablet rather sitting in silence? How is that rude?

We have evolved to a more instant communication society, communicating by and through the Internet.

Using a Internet connected device in what should be a social setting; a sit down meal, some excursion with friends or family, in a theatre -- is the same as reading a newspaper years ago (e.g.; at a sit down meal) -- anti-social behavior showing a lack of interest in face-to-face interaction.

I fail to see the difference in the current context. What was rude is still rude only the "tool of the rudeness" differs.

              It's not so much anti-social but anti-life.

People are so "busy" experiencing life via a tiny 4 inch screen that they are disconnected from the real physical world. People go to concerts and watch the the entire thing via that screen (while they record it which they will never watch again) instead of looking up and realizing they are actually there...at a real concert!

These devices just disconnect people more from reality and the real world than the average 4 hours a day in front of the tv that used to be quoted so much. Telling kids to get outside and enjoy the day...enjoy some fresh air and nature.

Forget about it...now they go outside and stand like mindless zombies staring at an even smaller screen. They are inactive and immobile - growing fatter and more stupid with each passing generation.

Welcome to the more "advanced" modern world - joke is on you.

Most people are just simply miserable. Starring a phone and playing online constantly is just a way to keep their mind busy and off their real problems.

It's a simple addiction. Internet addiction. It's real and affects millions of people. We think it's 'normal' because 'everybody is doing it.' Well, everybody eats junk food, drinks and smokes, and we know what will happen to people that do that. Diabetes, alcoholism and heart disease awaits them. What awaits internet addicts are lack of social life, no sex life, no meaning and no purpose.

There is a reason you are not supposed to be watching movies on a subway. You are supposed to use those moments to think. Think about your life and think about why you are on this stinking subway to begin with, and make plans to better your life. Watching a movie on the subway robs you of thinking and a chance at growing. Also, watching movies on a subway or anyplace outside robs you of paying attention to other people, places and things. The most basic things in life you learn by watching, listening and thinking.

Smart phones are robbing people of so much more than their free time. Boredom is needed for your mind to think. You are not supposed to be entertained 18 hours a day.

I feel sorry for this generation of kids growing up. Watching TV at home is one thing, but watching everywhere you go will cause more damage to society than we can predict.

Why do we need to socialize? We don't need to work together to eat and stay alive anymore. Humans mostly live in separate dwellings and communicate with machines more than other people.

I have a few smart phones, and limit the apps to what I need access to ASAP.
No need to FB Twitter etc. on my phone. Calls, Text, Email are enough by way of instant 24/7 contact. Other APP and Web Browsers have their place on my phone but I also limit the notifications my phone sends me to just the ones I 100% need (Calls, Calendar, Text, Email)
Even then when out with people once the group is all there I've been know to put my phone(s) on silent, and may check it when I step away from the group.
If you are on your phone 24/7 it's by choice...

Oh come on. It's a ''new'' technology that we have yet to incorporate adequately in our life. Trial and error. That is what we are doing with the society experiment of the smartphone right now.

This is basically a younger generation's toy that the older (most of it anyway) doesn't fully understand and therefore, is uneasy about setting boundaries for its use. My generation (25-35) is the real problem: adults behaving like kids. As adults, we are supposed to know how to behave appropriately in society (turn off phone), yet we are using them like teenagers (glued to the phone in inappropriate times). The younger generation will have grown up with it and will be better at understanding its effect on society, translating in a better usage of it depending on the social circumstances.

Off course it was always so much better ''when I was a kid'', but things change and are never perfect. And when we're all dead, new technologies will appear and our grand kids will be bitching about them too, saying it was so much better when they only had smartphones and that young generations are a sea of stupid.
