too funny seeing people with the need to denigrate a bicycle because it's pure simplicity/single-purpose.
Buying more than you need is what's ridiculous. if a single speed bike accomplishes what you need it for, a quick grocery-getter/errand runner etc, then getting more bike is what's poser.
If I were exercising on my bike or training for a triathalon or mountain biking or doing road work, I'd get the appropriate bike.
