Religion is an excuse for war -- my god told me to kill you because your god is false -- bullshit.

Lack of religion is a double edged sword -- the fear of the hell of Satan's keeps many of the simpletons in line. Your government generally supports, even enforces religion to its own benefit keeping the population in line.
