The world would be MUCH, MUCH worse..... religion is what holds it together.
You can equate it to the US considering Iraq would be liberated by their invasion of it. Many people held that view - now look at Iraq. Same for religion, its basically what has held things together - without beliefs, without god, in some region there's no reason not to kill thy neighbour for what he has. The world would basically fall apart without religion but in many ways, religion is also the cause of strife ie wars.
