We are on a interglacial period, I don't know how to say it better. It's not ice age, but it's not total opposit of it either. Let's say that we live warm coolish period between ice ages. And yes, it can get hotter as well as colder.

And still, the dinosaurs didn't die because ice age ended as earth was a lot warmer then and as far as I know, there even wasn't polar ice. And you probably have read about the asteroid.
