How to best cool your computer room/office?

It's that time of the year again... what are you using to keep your computer cool? What kind of fans? Straight up AC?

Overhead fan to circulate the air makes the room feel at least five degrees cooler if you are sitting in there with four monitors, more than five computers and other electronic gear like I am in my office.

my office usually stays cooler then any other spot in the house for some reason. It will be especially cool when I move my office to one of the bedrooms in the basement. Standard central air is enough during the hot summer months.

I'm a cheapskate, I turn the central air to 77 and have a WINDOW a/c unit in the computer room that I crank down to 60 when I'm in there or 70 when I'm gone. I don't believe in keeping the WHOLE house extra cool when I spend all my time in just 1 room.

Basement options work best but I haven't refinished my basement yet.

Open the window. Got rid of about 80% of my useless computer shit I didn't really need. Turned off the stuff I don't need to use.

Isn't it loud as hell though to have a window unit rumbling and blasting away in a nearby window?

Virtualization has contributed the most to keeping my office cool - I consolidated 4 machines that I've been running for one reason or another onto 1 moderately powerful machine. VMWare rocks.

I wish in my condo I could add a window unit in that room. I put up insulated drapes thru out my house its made a huge difference.

Any halfway recently made smaller unit won't be all that loud... just don't buy a huge one, those $100 ones will cool single rooms great, take a good look at electrical usage cause buying a $120 one instead of a $100 could end up saving you quite a bit by time the summer is up.

my case has 6 120mm fans in it.. sooo it stays pretty cool - and 2 air filters, lol. love those things.

I do like the idea about a window ac unit for the office area. Good tip.

I live on the 10th floor ontop of a hill with not many other high building around, so open windows get a good breeze flowing, even when its 90-95 outside.

I moved all shit that doesn't need to actually be "on site" into the basement, and I moved my desktops and laptops into an adjacent closet and ran long cables out for the monitors and keyboards, so that keeps the noise and heat down to a minimum.

Then a nice set of blinds to keep the sunlight down and a ceiling fan and HOPEFULLY you're set.

I have 6 PCs in this room now - 5 of them on 24/7 and at least 2 of them working hard most of the time - so cooling became a real issue this past summer, which has just ended in Australia. I ended up buying a portable refrigerative A/C unit that is set up to blow air across the front of the cases, all of which have an intake fan there. Fans are also placed liberally around the cases, each one has at least 4 chassis fans.

May sound silly but I also paid a bit more for a more efficient processor yesterday, to try to reduce heating and electricity costs. Of course there's probably not much point having a CPU consuming 25 or 30W less than its older brother when the case has 6 hard drives in it.

we keep our AC on 70 degree's during the summer.

Last year we got our windows replaced with some tinted stuff. Helps keep the heat out

                                                      House stays warm
                                                      office has 4 pc's running
no heat or over heating issues
                                                      ever.

so standard AC w/ a nice window upgrade

Because there is hardly any homes here with central ac, and the house we are renting only had two room ac's and the office did not have one, we put a small one in. Works like a charm, and we often get cold.

My office gets rather hot.. It's smaller and with the big system and two monitors the room can get 78-80 real fast.. doesn't help that it has almost reached 95 here already, so 120 isn't far away.

My system has a cone that sticks out of the case for the processor and another air trap on the door.. an outside 6" fan blows air into the case that way. Then 3 more 6" fans inside the case. One pulls air over the hd's, the other over the board, and a heat escape fan on top.

In my office I have a breeze fan thing to blow air from the hallway into the office.. With everything running I can keep the office about 1-2 degrees warmer than what the rest of the house is set at.

This is my last ditch effort to cool my machine down before I change it out for a water cooled system. The processors naturally run hot as hell already. When the office hits about 80f the processors reach about 80c - and everything restarts.

So far this year we haven't turned on the AC.... My home office here has a window that the sun beats on and it heats up the entire room all afternoon. I'm going to buy one of those little reflector films to put on the window, and then some shades.

I'm also looked at ceiling fans this past weekend.
