There's a reason why they're free. .xxx sucks and registrations are pitiful. ICM Registry is desperate for new customers. Total .xxx domains have been dropping by a few hundred every week and should be under 100k within the next few months.
Let's not forget the majority of those 103k currently registered domains include many mainstream companies who had to pay ICM's "extortion fee" to not have their brands tarnished by an association with XXX. After deducting the mainstream brands and speculators who are just holding domains, how many domains are left that are developed? It's safe to say that the number is less than 5k. .xxx is a ghost town. Anyone who is serious about their business is using either .com or their ccTLD.
The 1st year registration is free, but what are models going to pay for renewals?
