Fear and bullshit is a classic political strategy to get the voters motivated and involved. Sometimes it's used for good motives, because voters are idiots in general, sometimes bad, and other times just plain out weird, made up issues. Birthers, 9/11 truthers, gun control nuts... they fall into that last part and they're pretty much intellectual midgets.
I have 4 registered guns in my home. I'm still waiting for the scary liberals to come take them from me.
