exactly. So while they are still there, everyone is getting paid, the place is running, and everyone in that particular infrastructure is earning, nobody is getting overpaid.

If you bring in $100k a year, but have a $1m mortgage, and can afford to send your kids to school, sports, activities, eat out twice a week, go on holidays, and all the rest of it, can you afford to hire a $5k a year grunt worker to do the things that enable you to earn the 100k a year, to help finance the 1m mortgage, or are you suddenly running at a loss and everything is about to go tits up?

Times that by about a thousand, and you'll understand that footballers are 'overpaid' about as much as a 5k a year grunt worker is.
