Hosting company story... what would you do?

Last month, we ordered new IP addresses from our hosting company, after 10 days back and forth in trouble tickets, blaming us of incorrect server setup, they finally found out that they had connected the IPs to _wrong datacenter_. Then they added new IPs to the correct DC... incorrectly... more tickets.... another incorrect fix... more tickets and 4 more days to get it working. So 2 weeks to get new IPs setup.

One week goes by, and today we get an e-mail from the host saying one of our servers is giving an error message related to the fan, and another error caused due to their mistake during server setup... and they now need to take the server offline for 2 hours to repair the problem.

How would you feel about a situation like this if You'd run a high-traffic site? Would you buy your own hardware and switch to co-located?

Co_location will be worst for you. It is your responsabilty to manage the server, update kernels and apply security patches as well as monitor/replace the hardware.

If you go colo, the best is to have an identical box ( with hot swap drives ) ready to go ( OS installed, Control panel if required.... ). In case of failure, you can switch the server by loading the drives in the caddy. Naturally, I take for granted that you would have a backup drive. You still would have to maybe ( if main hardrive is corrupted ) to load your IP file, dns config file, etc ...

If you have a few servers, this is not too bad .. but for only one, it is costly.

Seems you were unlucky. Maybe your hosting providrer will get thing rights from now on ...

It used to be a good host, but the past couple of months it seriously feels like a competitor has paid some intern working there to cause us one little problem after another, 6 serious problems in 6 months starts to get over acceptable limit imho.

We are doing everything on the server management side ourselves anyway - private racks.

So on upside co-location would allow more architecture customization, but on the downside - a year ago when I researched getting hardware, found many blogs about people trying for months to get servers from Sun and Dell... I wonder if the situation has improved now?

Has anyone here had success with quick hardware purchases lately? Or are there still long waiting times?
