Hostgator generally has strong uptime, fast speeds, and reliable data storage. Their support staff, however, are lunkheads - I received an error message from their system once, asked technical support about it, and they literally repeated the message as a response instead of explaining it.

I had a dedicated with them. The server worked great. Probably because it wasn't their server, they use theplanet.com and resell it. Their support is horrible. Their techs are absolutely useless and don't know jack shit. Every single time I called they didn't have a clue what I was talking about and told me I needed to email their support so a higher level support guy can handle it. They take forever to respond to support emails too. Once you get everything up and running I guess it's ok. The bandwidth is fast, and price/performance they are good. If you don't need the support they are good, but I don't like knowing my server is being run by morons.

I'm assuming you are talking about a virtual account? Go dedicated. You have root and can do whatever you want.

Well, you get what you pay for. I had hosted with them in the past with no problems.

If you decide to go with them use coupon CHEAPHOSTING and get the first month for a penny.

I've been with them for about a year now. Some times they are able to help, others not so much. They assisted me when I moved a few blogs onto their serves, while one time they left me high and dry, so I have mixed feelings...

shared hosting is always crappy,

servage is also crappy , their mysql servers sucks ass, but their support is good tho:
servage.net.

and otherwise go dedi or vps : Jaguarpc has decent services that include full support;
