Watch this and it will snap things into focus a bit. If you are interested in truly gaining some real insight into this question, I would suggest again, reading his book "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion". It is hard for him to really get into it in a short segment as it first requires a great deal of discussion of basic evolutionary biology, neurology and decision making processes in the brain etc to really lay the foundation for what he is saying so that it makes great sense.
