          I'm more interested in surfers, but I would assume webmasters do it far more

              99.99% of surfers would have no idea what a referral link is. did you before you got into affiliate marketing?

                  Thing is, even if they don't know what it is, many have learned to be careful about what they are really clicking on, especially after all of the spam emails etc. If they see the strange referral code come up they might not click just to be safe, perhaps they can look for what is being promoted via Google instead.

                    There is a way of masking ref links in the browser - We used to do it back in the day with some simple javascript but that was stopped by the browsers - I have noticed that some sites are managing to do it again - I haven't looked into it but maybe that can be my job for the day...
