Fad tech purchases that have died or are close.

The recent buys in the last few years is staggering. Instagram, Tumblr, Whatsapp, etc. Why are the big guys throwing away billions when anyone can see that this is dead end game? Do you want to go back in time and buy Broadcast.com, Myspace, Youtube? So why keep repeating this mistake? I really don't get it.

Obviously because they are all fucking total idiots. You are clearly a genius and should email them telling them where they are going wrong with their billion dollar companies.

Why do you think Google's purchase of YouTube was a mistake?

youtube is almost a utility to the modern world like electricity.

and those companies dont know how to grow mobile so they are buying mobile. mobile is the internet right now.

Youtube has lost money since inception(havent checked lately). Great to create traffic but not so much of a money maker for Google.

Whatsapp is all third world users. Great for mobile just not the mobile they wanted. Instagram? Does anyone still think the grainy, yellowed photos are cool? Snapchat? Come on.

I wonder why it never makes sense for them just to do what they do and give the cash back to the shareholders? Google could just be a huge search engine that spits out cash. Facebook could do the same. They didn't need to buy Instagram to ficure out they needed more ads on the mobile facebook did they?

Calculator watches of the 80s.. I had PAC man on my wrist when I was a kid.. Now they are doing it again. Smart watches are a upcoming fad that will die a painful death.

It might just be good business - they are buying any company that might provide them with serious competition in the near future.

I'm currently reading a "Titan" about Rockefeller and that's pretty much exactly what he did with Standard Oil. If Facebook buys Instagram and Snapchat and a few others, they completely dominate social networking.

I think that's all it is really. In most cases I don't think they buy these websites to turn a profit. I think they buy these sites to control the future of that site.

This has been a business practice for hundreds, probably even thousands of years.

There are many reasons to buy a business. Profit is only one of them.

In the end, it is the only one that matters. Thus my point.
