ISP says "pay us or we'll make your site run slow for our customers"

    Came across this article today:
    http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/13...a-ceo-net.html

I might be missing something though since I haven't heard the other side of the story but it does seem like a bad precedent.

I think the new CEO of Virgin Media is going to have egg on his face once Branson put the hammer down on him. Branson is pro innovation and I can't see him letting this happen (even if he did already sign off on it).

This will only be the start of it. IMO the power here is with the people. Instead of expecting a govt to do something about it.. The people are the ones that need to act.

Govt's are slow and full of lobbyist whom lets face it bribe politicians. The consumers are the ones who can make the difference here by canceling their service.

Soon as one company gets away with this, it's very certain others will follow.
In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.

Virgin media are absolutely shit. Their customer service is shit and so is their billing, They dont seem to know what the hell is going on and pass you from one person to another when you need help. I would never recomend them and there are much cheaper services that are far better than Virgin fuckup

The other thing we found out about them is this. We were on NTL for around 2 years with no problems at all. Then we get a letter from Virgin Media saying that they have bought NTL and that we would now be billed by Virgin fuckup, We pay by direct debit so we did not think anything of it, anyhow we were moving house and we wanted to keep NTL/Virgin so we ring them up to get it transfered to our new address which they said was not a problem. We moved and about 2 weeks later we get a guy come round to install the cable but he also brings in a virgin top box which we did not even want and says sorry you have to have the complete package and you cant just have the internet conection on its own. Any way to cut a long story short and after god knows how many wasted phone calls to Virgin fuckup I finally decided to contact NTL and ask them why we had to have the complete package and to my suprise they said "no you dont" and Virgin had no right to even suggest this. So they are telling people that you have to have the full package when you clearly dont plus the fact that NTL and Virgin still have seperate billing accounts even though they had merged and Virgin would not tell us this what a fucked up way to con people out of money I wonder how many other people are being conned by Virgin...bastards

Actually, this isn't anything horribly new; just their approach is a bit worse. Internet providers purchase transit to large POPs through different networks for not only redundancy, but speed. Unless somebody has a special queue, the traffic falls into what's generally the cheapest transit (in the US, usually Cogent.)

Virgin's CEO is just taking the dickheaded approach of "I don't give a shit about my customers; if you want your service to them not to not suck, you'll pay me for it." rather than the previous, "Shit my bandwidth sucks, I need to lay/rent some fiber."

That cost should be passed on to the customer, not the site operators. I pay a lot more for my internet so I don't have to deal with bullshit support operators in India who don't know the difference between http and html and also so I can have faster access to the internet.

that's some scary shit, but he's right about the net neutrality thing, who's gonna stop him? The people? I doubt it, they can't resist getting high speed at some bullshit intro price.

Guess he can start the first Internet World War.. imagine all the hacker types ganging up on Virgin as a bulldog for NN lol ISP's going after eachother with cyber attacks... would make a good movie...

I found out the hard way that you can't push an ISP into doing a damn thing.... if you bitch too bad, your internet will be total crap until they decide you have been punished enough. I only have an option of ONE ISP in my area. I once threatened to find another isp and my net was down for three full days..
