    What an awesome dog. Kudos to you for rescuing her. For the food ask your vet when you take her in. Sometimes different breeds require different things for optimum health especially if they are older.

    As for her settling in it will just take time. Dogs that have been rescued tend to adapt very quickly and trust much more quickly. Spending time with her playing and going for walks will do wonders for her and she will be super happy.

            We have a cat which we got from a rescue centre. Our last cat was killed by two assholes who live not far from here. This one is now a house cat. Too many fucking idiots out there nowadays.

                Loryn, kudos for getting a rescue dog. Our Buster was taken from a pound just days before he was to be put down as "unadoptable". The AZ Rescue worked with him and put him in a loving foster home and then we got him. He had some issues and still has a few but, after 2 1/2 years of working with him he is not the same dog. Time, love and patience will help heal Coty.

                Good for you for taking her to doggy classes. The structure will help her as will your daily walks. Her love for the garage corner sounds like she is freaked out by all the open space. You might try getting her a kennel or crate. Dogs like having their little "caves" to hide out in. BUster loves his and even sleeps in it at night. If you do get one, don't force her to go in it. Put it in the garage corner she seems to like, put her bed in it and leave the door to it open. If she uses it, then you can slowly move it towards and eventually into the house.

                Keep up with the love and hard work. She is a very lucky girl.

                            My Lab is doing great on Chicken Soup dog food, after having the squirts with Innova -- so watch out for the Innova. It's supposed to be a good food, but it's too rich for some dogs.

                                        Congrats on getting a rescue dog. I swear they know they're getting a second chance. I've fostered pits before, and every time, it breaks my heart to see how people mistreat them. May the previous owners some day get treated the same, and may you have many happy years to come with your new pal.

                                        Food's a tricky thing. Innova (about as close to raw food as commercial food gets) can be good stuff, if your pet's kidneys can handle all the protein. My dog (a Boston Terrier) is a little older, with allergies, and the only things that work for her are Eukanuba lamb and rice and Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken. I went with Hund-n-Flocken because 1) they sell it at my local pet store, 2) she likes it better, and 3) Iams/Eukanuba performs animal testing. Any good owner-run pet store will be able to explain the differences between their pet food offerings and should give you several days worth of free samples.

                                            That doesn't sound messed up at all, that is exactly what I was planning on doing. I was going to put on my bathing suit and take a bath with her. I think that is the only way she will feel okay with it. It might be cold but what the hell after everything she has been through I can handle the cold water. haha

                                                                                    Thank you very much! I have to find some sort of food for her because she has BAD diarrhea with sounds and all. I feel bad for her, I don't know if it is nerves from the transition or if it's the food. But poor girl has it bad and she drinks a ton of water. She drinks more water than eats food. In fact today she hasn't eaten any of her food just drank a whole bowl of water. Maybe the owner before only fed her at night so I will see if she eats tonight, she ate yesterday in the evening. Either way I have to find something for her tummy.

                                                                                        When I got my dog, she didn't eat for 2 days. As long as she's drinking, it might just be nerves. Definitely check with a vet (especially because diarrhea can be caused by any number of nasties), but they can take a while to adapt. The good news is after days of not eating, he'll be good and hungry, so he'll eat whatever you give him once he's ready. So pick a good, healthy food while you have that window.

It's almost like I have to teach her to be a dog, getting up on the couch, or chewing on shoes, or peeing on the floor. haha She is so scared and timid. She walks around constantly looking for approval on anything she does. It makes me so sad. If I call her over to me and give her loves she sits with me and will stay in the spot as if she is not allowed to go anywhere else on her own. I have taken to hiding treats through out the house in every room and then I get her to try to find them all so she is forced to walk around the whole house on her own. Last night she walked around the house and I was up every hour taking her out because I thought she had to go to the bathroom but she didn't she was just touring when I was asleep. So I have my work cut out but she is getting use to running around the house. It's hard to believe it's only been 24 hours since she has been here but she has already come a long way since then. I can't wait until it's been a month. At the rate she is going she should be good to go. I will never give up on her, she is the best dog. I just love her so much I get tears when I kiss her.

                                                                                                    She has a little bunny I call Bunny Fufu, and I sing to her, Little Bunny Fufu hopping through the forest picking up the field mice and popping them on the head, and at the end of the song she chews the bunnies tummy making it squeak. It's so fucking cute how fast she picked that up. Now she squeaks the bunny as a calling for me to come in and kiss her. So I sit here and hear *squeak* *squeak* squeak* and I get up and say YEAH COTY YEAH COTY and give her hugs and kisses. Then I sit down and within 10 seconds I hear *squeak* Squeak* Squeak*. It's just too cute. She is so smart!

                                                                                                                    I can tell you a little about what worked for my dog in that department, maybe it'll help you out with Coty.

                                                                                                                    First, you're probably right, the transition and the new surroundings are taking it's toll on Coty's digestive system, and it's perfectly normal. Couple that with nerves and a change in diet and you have the makings of some vile doggy squirts. But that can be remedied over the course of a few days.

                                                                                                                    Some of the suggestions for dog food have been good. I used to feed Sully Performatrin, which is a very good brand with human grade ingredients. But whatever brand you get her, here's the trick for her lack of interest in eating..... try buying some beef boullion or a few cartons of beef broth from your grocer. Warm up maybe a quarter to a half cup of the broth (or mix some boullion in with some warm water), stir it into Coty's dog food which will soften it up some, making it easier for her to chew. Make sure you do this in front of her, so she can get a good wiff of the beef aroma. Once you set it down she should eat at least some of it right away, because I know of no dog that can resist this. In a day or two her poops should start firming up.

                                                                                                                    However, if that doesn't work and she still won't eat you can add a little bit of bacon grease into the mix as well. No dog on the planet would pass that up. If she doesn't eat it all you may have to figure out a way to keep your other critters away from Coty's food dish or they may swoop in when she's not around and finish it for her. :D

                                                                                                                    Oh, one more thing...
                                                                                                                    I used to always add a spoonful of parsely flakes to my dog's food along with the broth. Aside from parsely being one of the most nutrient-rich foods in the world it is also a natural digestive aid. I realize that several of the higher-end dry dog foods out there already have some in it, but adding a bit more I found to be a good idea. Hey, my Sully lived to be 17 and a half years old, and I believe it was largely due to his diet and of course all the exercise I gave him over the years. And the love... definitely the love.

                                                                                                                    And yes, I've discussed the above with several of the vets I took Sully to over the years, all said it was okay. In the last years of Sully's life a few of those same vets commented how remarkable it was that he had lived so long. Anyway good luck with it, I'm sure you'll have Coty feeling great in no time. Here's hoping.

Do you have proof the dog was beaten? I realize the lady wasn't nice, but you don't know that she beat Coty. Just because the dog hunches down when you try to pet her on the head doesn't mean she was abused. I hear this all the time from people. Dogs who haven't been socialized or are fearful by nature, tend to be hand shy. In fact, most dogs don't even like to be pat on the head.

                                                                                                                        People in general have a tendency to feel a lot of "pity" for shelter and rescue dogs. I have a lot of shelter experience, and I see it all the time both from visitors and the dog walkers. In most cases, the dog simply was not socialized enough around people and dogs as a puppy. Not because they were "abused."

                                                                                                                        I'm very surprised your groomer took that bite as lightly as she did. Being bitten is one thing, but when blood is drawn that's pretty bad. The last thing a dog wants to do is bite. However, once a dog does bite for the first time for whatever reason, she will be much more likely to bite in the future. Your groomer was wrong to tell you that Coty's bite was not aggressive. (Never take behavior or training advice from a groomer.) In dogs, 90% of aggression is fear based. The rescuer should have told you to muzzle the dog before taking her to a groomer, or suggested going to a trainer who specializes in aggression first. This sounds like a very irresponsible rescuer.

                                                                                                                        It has nothing to do with "love." Have you ever managed a shelter? Do you realize how difficult it is for shelter managers who make the decisioin to euthanize a dog? And the Vet Tech or Vet who inserts the needle? You can NOT save every single dog. And from what you wrote about Coty, I would have to agree. The shelter would be liable of being sued if this dog ever bit someone. They are also trying to protect the public from aggressive dogs. I have seen a lot of dogs' mental states deteoriate and start acting in weird ways because of so much time spent in the shelter. It becomes obvious at a certain point that it is more humane to euthanize the dog than keep him alive if no one is going to adopt him. I'm telling you this because you do seem to have the typical warped view that the people at the shelter are the bad ones.

                                                                                                                        Good luck with your training! Hopefully you chose a trainer who uses Positive Reinforcement and has experience with aggression.

So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants

Mandy, our client service director, rescued a german 2 months ago and named her Faith. it has been a labor of love to bring her out of her shell and get her over her anxiety after being abused. there is a long way to go but it will happen for both Faith and Coty. my neighbor also just rescued a dog from death row at the pound and Sadie is the most adorable, scruffy looking thing you ever saw. she is the sweetest, most loving dog and i can't imagine why someone abused her (she arrived at the pound very badly beaten and all bloody) and dumped her off or why no one wanted to rescue her at the pound. i get to keep her at my house when my neighbor is at work and i just love her. good luck with Coty and remain patient, changes will still be occuring for up to 2 years with her. you did a wonderful thing taking her home

Being bitten is one thing, but when blood is drawn that's pretty bad. The last thing a dog wants to do is bite. However, once a dog does bite for the first time for whatever reason, she will be much more likely to bite in the future. Your groomer was wrong to tell you that Coty's bite was not aggressive. (Never take behavior or training advice from a groomer.) In dogs, 90% of aggression is fear based. The rescuer should have told you to muzzle the dog before taking her to a groomer, or suggested going to a trainer who specializes in aggression first. This sounds like a very irresponsible rescuer.



                                                                                                                                            It has nothing to do with "love." Have you ever managed a shelter? Do you realize how difficult it is for shelter managers who make the decisioin to euthanize a dog? And the Vet Tech or Vet who inserts the needle? You can NOT save every single dog. And from what you wrote about Coty, I would have to agree. The shelter would be liable of being sued if this dog ever bit someone. They are also trying to protect the public from aggressive dogs. I have seen a lot of dogs' mental states deteoriate and start acting in weird ways because of so much time spent in the shelter. It becomes obvious at a certain point that it is more humane to euthanize the dog than keep him alive if no one is going to adopt him. I'm telling you this because you do seem to have the typical warped view that the people at the shelter are the bad ones.

                                                                                                                                            Good luck with your training! Hopefully you chose a trainer who uses Positive Reinforcement and has experience with aggression.
                                                                                                                                            The lady that got Coty told me the woman who had her abused her, so I just believed her. I know this may sound harsh to some but I am not against putting down an animal. In fact in most cases I have felt I wanted a dog put down because of suffering. I am not one of those freaks that try to save every animal I understand that it is impossible to help them all and that some animals are better off put down. Some good dogs and kitties get put down, it's not perfect nor will it ever be and I understand that. I am a realist. I just told the story of Coty and what happened with her and that she was very close to being put down so I am very lucky to have gotten her. I know that if they can't find a home for a dog in a certain time they put them down to make room and I understand that, but to say she is unfit to be in a home IMO was stupid. Anyone who knows animals at all can see she is not unfit.

                                                                                                                                            Coty has shown NO aggression to me, hasn't bit me once and I have tested the waters, she is very very scared of water though, so I haven't literally tested the waters haha, anyway when I turn on the hose she bails, so in about a week I am going to try to bath her and that is where, I guess, I will see if she bites. I WILL NOT HANDLE BITING. That is a no no and I will be aggressive towards her if she does. That is the one thing I will never tolerate from a dog is to bite me. My Daddy raised me that way and I firmly believe it. I wasn't there when she bite the girl so I couldn't really do anything about it, you know I am sure, to discipline a dog a while after the incident won't do any good. I took the girls word that Coty bit her because she was scared not because she was trying to kick her ass or anything. Coty didn't bit her until the girl put the water on her, up to that point she was very nice to the girl and even gave her kisses.

                                                                                                                                            Coty has doggie training school on Thursday so I am going to probably learn as much as I can about her actions from him. The trainer is one of the number one trainers on the west coast for German Shepard?s and has worked with abused dogs as well. I am a positive reinforcement training person so I will not tolerate negative training, that is old school and we have learned a lot by watching wolves in packs how to truly train a dog and it is not by beating or being negative. You want to get the dog to want to do good by tuning into the dog's instincts.

                                                                                                                                            I will for sure let you guys know what happens and how she grows. I hope she was never abused, but I can't rule it out either.

Make sure you do this in front of her, so she can get a good wiff of the beef aroma. Once you set it down she should eat at least some of it right away, because I know of no dog that can resist this. In a day or two her poops should start firming up.

                                                                                                                                                However, if that doesn't work and she still won't eat you can add a little bit of bacon grease into the mix as well. No dog on the planet would pass that up. If she doesn't eat it all you may have to figure out a way to keep your other critters away from Coty's food dish or they may swoop in when she's not around and finish it for her. :D

                                                                                                                                                Oh, one more thing...
                                                                                                                                                I used to always add a spoonful of parsely flakes to my dog's food along with the broth. Aside from parsely being one of the most nutrient-rich foods in the world it is also a natural digestive aid. I realize that several of the higher-end dry dog foods out there already have some in it, but adding a bit more I found to be a good idea. Hey, my Sully lived to be 17 and a half years old, and I believe it was largely due to his diet and of course all the exercise I gave him over the years. And the love... definitely the love.

                                                                                                                                                And yes, I've discussed the above with several of the vets I took Sully to over the years, all said it was okay. In the last years of Sully's life a few of those same vets commented how remarkable it was that he had lived so long. Anyway good luck with it, I'm sure you'll have Coty feeling great in no time. Here's hoping.
                                                                                                                                                Thank you Mr. Smith, great advice I will try all of that. In fact I am heading down stairs to put some beef boullion in her food. I love that stuff myself so I already have it. I will also get some parsley for her. I love that idea.

                                                                                                                                                When I massage her, her muscles are very little and very loose, they are not tight or big/full like they should be so I am sure with daily exercise and the right food and added ingredients she will get her muscles and body into the shape it should be.

                                                                                                                                                I just picked up a large bag of Royal Canine for German Shepard?s. I will see how that works for her. It is soft and she hasn't eaten it yet so I am sure with some beef boullion on it that will help.

                                                                                                                                                        Once you've walked her over the course of a few months and she's getting her muscle tone and her cardio health back, one thing that really got my dog in shape (when he was the age Coty is) was to take him into a park, get on my mountain bike, and have him chase me around the trails. You can slowly ride faster and faster, and over time your dog will get in superior shape.

                                                                                                                                                        In fact it eventually became hard for me to keep ahead of my dog back then, and he became known as the fastest pooch in the nieghborhood. It was funny when one day after years of doing this with him we were up at a cabin and a bigger meaner dog started chasing him. All Sully did was play with that dog by running around the cabin... there was zero chance that dog could catch him, he was that fast.

                                                                                                                                                        When I get my next dog (and I will at some point) I'm definitely going to run it with the mountain bike once it gets big enough to do that.

                                                                                                                                                                        I can't wait to take Coty to the park and on a trip. With my back and stuff it's not good for me to be running but I want her to get that exercise so great idea on the bike, thank you. Of course I will have to work her up to that pace and I can ride slowly. Now I just have to buy a bike, anything for Coty. Funny story on your puppy though, I can just see him getting chanced and having the look of HA HA HA HA HA and the other dog serious like I am going to get you. I could watch that all day. LOL

                                                                                                                                                                        Coty doesn't feel like this is her house yet, but if she only knew how much this house has changed all for her, even me. It's only been 48 hours and every minute of every day she is there with me. We went for a car ride today, because I had a doctor’s appointment and I didn't want to leave her in the house or backyard by herself. I brought her into the doctor’s office, she had to stay in the waiting room but she loved everyone and wasn't shyin' away at all. So she is growing already. I could see it in her little eyes when she walked around the room, she had the, "Yes I know I am beautiful and everyone loves me" look. I was a proud Mama. It was funny too, well not funny GREAT, no one believed that I had only had her for two days. When I went back to talk to the Doc they said she had a constant look of worry or wonder of where I was. That made me so happy, sad, but happy. I don't want her to add to her worry list like that but I guess after everything she has been through and then having someone who loves her like I do she is going to feel that way. Nothing I can do about that.

                                                                                                                                                                        I weighed her today and she weighs 65.7 pounds and I can feel her bones (ribs and spine) and lose muscles etc... so hopefully she will put on about 10 pounds with the good food and lots of exercise, which I think would be a great weight for her frame. Her frame is pretty big for a female Shepard, IMO.

                                                                                                                                                                        Thank you Mr. Smith again! I’m going to Craigslist to look for a bike. I really don't have the money for a bike but I gotta do what I gotta do. She needs it and it will be good for me too!

                                                                                                                                                                            Thank you Mr. Fidel! I am enjoying every minute with her and the journey is just as fun as actually getting to her destination. I get teary eyed a lot because I can see it in her and feel it from her. When I grabbed the leash and she was in a panic to hide I lost it. But now we make out with the leash so it's getting all good!!! Maybe I can teach her some S & M , you know turn the bad into good. Okay that is even sick to just joking about. lol

I can never think of cool names like that, I always go for the human names when naming animals. I found a bearded dragon outside, took him in and healed him. (He had a boo-boo when I found him, I posted about him when I found him.) I named him Ivan and he now lives with my friend Missy. His name fits, Ivan, but its human name again.

                                                                                                                                                                                Those names are great, and it's good to know that there are others out there adopting dogs like Coty. I don't think I will ever get a young puppy again, unless of course it is abused or abandon. After Coty I just understand even more than I ever did before just how important it is to do this. I am not saying in anyway that if someone goes out and gets a puppy from a breeder that it's bad, not at all it's great. It's just this is now me. I have saved so many animals in my life, including dogs, but only kept one, a kitty. Rescuing a dog like this is one of the best thing I have ever felt.

                                                                                                                                                                                    I wish I could do that with Coty but she doesn't look fast enough. Maybe after she gains some muscle strength she will surprise me, plus the bike rides!

                                                                                                                                                                                        once you know she is ok take her to the dog park maybe the first time leaver her on a leash and walk around the park if she fine take her in. both of those pics were taken at he dog park they love it they get to play with other dogs and just run and run. both of them now run out to the car anytime the garage gets open because they want to go to the park and they have their special dog friends there too

                                                                                                                                                                                            That is another thing I want Coty to have is special doggie friends that she can have play dates with. I think it would be great for her self esteem to have friends, I know it is for mine!

We got one of our family's Lhasa Apsos from the pound many moons ago. Like your baby, her old owner seemed to have beat/kicked her, and she is VERY scared of feet to this day.

                                                                                                                                                                                                However, she's about 16 years old now and still loving life! Enjoy your new baby and always remember to treat her like a queen!

My wife and I recently saw a show on Oprah about puppy mills. It was heartbreaking. We ending up donating to a bunch of the rescue organizations that were mentioned on the show.
