At the end of it all, Putin out maneuvered the world. You were busy with Snowden, the Olympics and double toilets and stray dogs, gay rights, the oscars and whatever shitty reality show you love and he was busy executing his plan flawlessly. End of story. He won't be stopped and the world is full of pussies.
The US and allies could place economic sanctions on Russia and shut them down financially, trade sanctions and cripple the economy and then flood the oil market with cheap oil (the only reason they climbed out of debt to begin with) and push Russia back into the Stone Age. Of course Putin calculates that each and every one of you are just a bunch of shiftless pussies too afraid to do anything and here he is. Why shouldn't they take a strategically important base back ? You have no answers other than wild fantasies about agreements that are never enforced or that are continually broken by all parties to begin with.
One thing the west just refused to accept about Russia is that for Russia and it's leadership, the Cold War never was lost. It never even fucking ended. The west proclaimed it to be over and they never stopped fighting. Today, again you see the price to be paid for being out maneuvered by a shrewd politician who is better at his job than anyone else in the developed world.
