Salvador Dali, one of the all time greats.

I would like to know if there are any Dali fans out there, for me one of my all time greatest artists. In you ever in Spain, visit his museum in Figueres, although his best paintings are probably in Madrid.

As a surrealist, Dali was great, and he has inspired many artists...

There is a good Dali museum in St Petersburg, Florida - check it out, if you are ever in the area.

I always enjoy his work. Just about the only paintings I like in the Tate Modern in London are his.

A bunch of us went to the Salvador Dali museum in St. Pete a few years ago during the Tampa Nightmoves Show -- it was the highlight of the trip, for me. Dali is one of the great artists (and great con men) of the 20th century.

Anyone for H.R. Giger? Gottfried Helnwein?

You pretty much would have to be to do the stuff he did and I mean that in a good way.

I really enjoy his art, I like Rene Magritte's work too.

Did not actually know that, will keep it in mind for future reference, if you ever go to Madrid and want to see his paintings, the Reina Sofia museum is the place to go.

One time I was visiting Fredericton, New Brunswick, I went to the art museum there to see his painting "Santiago the Great". Posters or whatever do it no justice. The painting is like 10 feet tall. It's massive, and the detail in it is incredible.

In the late 80s my father was a lawyer in somewhat famous legal case (well, famous in the art world) that detailed how Dali was complicit in his own forgeries. Basically what he would do is sign pieces of blank canvas and then sell those to others who would then either do their best to copy his work or to create originals in his style. Dali was as crafty a businessman as he was talented an artist (I know, I know, there are many Dali haters out there, but just run with me on this).

Anyway, long story short, I would never buy anything that is supposedly done by Dali because really, no one can tell what is real and what is fake. Okay, that's a bit of an overstatement, but it's definitely extremely hard and debatable.

Also, I should say that I'm referring almost solely to prints of his, not original paintings.

From Lee Catterall's book about my father's case:

Don't be fooled by Dali's signature on a print. He signed thousands of blank sheets of paper that later were used to reproduce Dali images, usually paintings. More often, his signature was forged on such reproductions. He signed his name in so many ways that experts are at a loss in verifying an authentic Dali signature. Before buying any Dali print, also consider Dali's Abuses, which constituted overt participation more than mere facilitation, in the manufacture of hundreds of thousands "limited edition" prints bearing his name and his surrealistic images. While many of the paintings are authentic works of Dali, they have been reproduced in numerous "limited editions" and sold as "original" lithographs, etchings, etc. The painting most commonly reproduced for such fraudulent purposes was Lincoln in Dalivision, "prints" of which Los Angeles art appraiser Dena Hall testified in the Hawaii trial have become as commonplace as "pancakes at the pancake house." Other favorite Dali paintings used as models by the print fakers were Corpus Hypercubicus, Metamorphosis of Narcissus and Hallucinogenic Toreador. Dali assuredly did not participate in fraudulent prints bearing his name and images that were not his, which are referred to as "fake fakes" and are far less numerous than fakes based on Dali's actual paintings.

                                                              Surrealism rules!!

Actually very little Surrealism is actually any good. Dali was the master, Magritte was also very good. Yves Tanguy was also very good. But outside these few a lot of surrealist works were just crap. There are a few talented painters in the Neo-surrealist movement who are still creating great stuff, but unfortunately a lot of what is held under the surrealist heading has now turned into shitty fantasy art or just macabre scenery. No one will every live up to the legacy Dali created for himself...

Posters or whatever do it no justice. The painting is like 10 feet tall. It's massive, and the detail in it is incredible.

Van Gogh's "Starry Night", though tiny, is exactly the same -- prints just don't do these masterworks any justice.

Also have to say in his favour that a few people took advantage of that
