They are far safer than real cigarettes. There is no smoke, it's water vapor... like boiling water. There are, at most, 10 ingredients in e-liquid. PG and/or VG, water, nicotine (which can be decreased), sometimes vodka or other alcohol if you're one of those who like to replace water with alcohol for a strong "throat hit", and the ingredients of the flavoring (which there are countless resources as to which flavoring companies are safe to use, a big favorite is LorAnn).
PG is found in a wide variety of products from food, to health and beauty, to everything in between.
VG is most commonly used as a baking ingredient but can also be found in a wide variety of products.
Nicotine is about as harmful as caffeine, unless you're a retard who can't follow mixing and safety instructions, in which case you should leave that to the companies who produce and sell e-liquid. Nicotine is also found in various foods people ingest daily, like tomatoes.
Kids can buy real cigarettes from stores too. I was buying them when I was 12. It's more a parental thing than a "ban them because it's a so called fad"; although I do agree that some policing needs to be done on the ad networks, but stil, it's not a reason to "ban them!!!"
The FDA wants to ban them, but not because they are dangerous. The FDA couldn't care less if you die, in fact, they'd rather you die, so long as you pay those triple and quadruple taxes first. Accept that fact. Same reasons why online gambling is illegal, because taxation cannot be forced and regulated.
Big tobacco is pissed off because they're hurting real cig sales, and the FDA is pissed because they cannot tax them like real cigs since they contain no tobacco.
Big Pharma is pissed off because they're hurting medical cessation sales, and the FDA is pissed because they cannot be taxed as medical cessation products.
