looks like the early data about them helping people quit smoking is a fallacy - but good marketing ploy!

Smokers who wish to quit commonly use electronic cigarettes to help them, despite the lack of evidence that the devices work, a new study finds.

One-third of smokers looking to quit had used e-cigarettes, according to the study. These smokers were also less likely to succeed than those who did not use e-cigarettes: About 21 percent of e-cigarette users were tobacco-free after seven months, compared with 31 percent of those who didn't use e-cigarettes.
