It's starting to become quite common lately as more and more devices contain lithium in their batteries. Lithium and the very air we breathe, do NOT mix well together.
You can actually start a camp fire with a lithium and/or NmH battery in the wild. Even with a dead one. Puncture it with knife, once air gets in, fire starts shooting out.
So, when seals on batteries weaken and air gets in, this is what causes devices to burst into flames
