Actually, it's more about calorie density and nutritional worth of the food you're eating.
If you just eat real food, it's really, really hard to get more than 2000 calories a day. I lost 50 lbs without counting calories at all. Remove grains and soda from your diet, eat only vegetables, meat and proper fats/oils and you'll never be hungry.
