She and I actually took a road trip last summer to New Mexico and stayed out in the desert near a town called Salinas for a week. We had a blast, took all the scopes with us. We also did a bit of traveling to insure a chance to view the Venus Transit, which we did, and it was every bit as beautiful as you might imagine. (pic below)
We were both mildly devastated when ISON didn't survive its brush with the sun. That was our next planned road trip.

Ya...I was bummed by the ISON "death" as well. That damned sun!
Comet Kohoutek was "out and about" when I was a kid and it was great study.
